An electric geyser is one of the biggest electricity loads in many Pakistani homes. Heating water uses a lot of power, and a geyser left on all day keeps reheating the tank long after everyone has had their shower. With electricity tariffs rising and many homes now running solar systems, automating your geyser is one of the most useful smart home upgrades you can make. This guide explains how it works, which devices to use, and how to do it safely.
First: is your geyser electric or gas?
Many homes in Pakistan use gas geysers, while others use electric geysers or hybrid (gas + electric) models, especially where gas pressure is low in winter. The devices in this guide switch electric heating elements on and off. A traditional gas geyser with a pilot flame cannot be controlled by a smart switch. If you have a hybrid geyser, you can automate the electric element only. If in doubt, check the rating plate on your geyser or ask your electrician.
Why automate your geyser?
- Heat water only when you need it. A schedule can turn the geyser on before your morning shower and off after, instead of running all day.
- See how much energy it uses. Energy-monitoring switches show real-time power and history, so you can see what your geyser actually costs you.
- Use your solar power. If you have solar panels, schedule heating for sunny hours, when your panels are producing power.
- Control it from anywhere. Forgot to switch it off before leaving? Turn it off from your phone.
- Protection. Overload protection can switch off the circuit if current or power goes beyond limits you set.
Choose a switch rated for the load
This is the most important safety point. Electric geysers draw a lot of current. Do not use an ordinary light switch or a small smart plug for a geyser. Check the wattage on your geyser's rating plate and choose a device rated well above it. As a rough guide, current (amps) = watts ÷ voltage, so a 2,000 W element on 230 V draws around 9 A. Always leave a safety margin and follow your electrician's advice.
Option 1: SONOFF POW Elite POWR320D (20A)
The SONOFF POW Elite POWR320D (Rs 10,500) is a Wi-Fi smart power meter switch that supports loads up to 20A, which SONOFF lists as suitable for heaters. Its LCD display shows real-time power, voltage, current and cumulative energy, and it stores 6 months of hourly usage history that you can export to Excel. You can set custom overload protection for power, voltage and current, and create timers in the eWeLink app. It also works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can say "turn on the geyser".
Option 2: SONOFF BASIC-1GSP DIN Rail Matter Switch (32A)
For a cleaner installation inside your distribution board, the SONOFF BASIC-1GSP (Rs 9,500) mounts on a standard DIN rail and handles up to 32A – SONOFF lists water heaters, floor heating and EV chargers among its uses. It offers real-time voltage, current, power and energy monitoring with cost calculation and data export, custom overload protection, and double-pole switching that disconnects both live and neutral. Because it uses Matter over Wi-Fi, it works with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings.
Step-by-step setup
- Check your geyser. Confirm it has an electric element and note its wattage.
- Choose the device. POW Elite for a wall or box installation with an LCD display, BASIC-1GSP for a DIN-rail installation in your distribution board.
- Hire a qualified electrician. These devices are wired into mains circuits. Switch off the breaker first, use cable of the correct thickness, and make sure the geyser circuit has a proper breaker and earth.
- Connect to the app. Pair the POW Elite with the eWeLink app, or add the BASIC-1GSP to your Matter platform. Use your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Create a schedule. For example: on at 6:00 AM, off at 7:30 AM; on again at 6:00 PM, off at 9:00 PM. Adjust to your family's routine and the season.
- Set overload protection. Set limits slightly above your geyser's normal power draw.
- Watch the data. After a week, check the energy history and fine-tune your schedule.
Smarter automations with Home Assistant
A schedule is a great start, but Home Assistant lets you go further. For example, you can:
- Turn the geyser on only on weekdays, with a later schedule at weekends.
- Use a SONOFF R5 scene controller (Rs 6,500) or SNZB-01P wireless button (Rs 8,500) as a "boost" button that runs the geyser for 30 minutes.
- Combine solar production data (if your inverter supports an integration) to heat water when you have spare solar power.
- Get a notification if the geyser has been on longer than expected.

Tips to save more electricity
- Lower the geyser thermostat to a comfortable temperature rather than the maximum.
- Insulate hot water pipes, especially on rooftops and outside walls.
- In summer, you may only need a short heating period – or none at all.
- Use the energy history to compare months and see the effect of your changes.
- Apply the same idea to other big loads, such as water pumps and room heaters, using a switch rated for each load.
Safety checklist
- Use a device rated well above your geyser's current draw.
- Have a qualified electrician do the installation.
- Make sure the circuit has a correctly sized breaker and earthing.
- Keep the device away from water and inside a proper enclosure.
- Never bypass the geyser's own thermostat or safety valve.
