The single most common reason a smart switch "does not work" after installation in Pakistan is not a faulty switch. It is a wiring mismatch: a switch that needs a neutral wire was installed in a box that has none. This guide explains what neutral and no-neutral mean, how to check your own switch box safely, and which House Sync switches fit each situation.
What is a neutral wire?
A normal circuit has two conductors. The live (phase) wire carries the supply from your distribution board, and the neutral wire completes the circuit back. A traditional light switch only interrupts the live wire, so many electricians only bring two wires into the switch box: the incoming live, and the "switched live" that goes up to the light. The neutral goes straight to the light fitting and never enters the switch box.
That is perfectly fine for an ordinary switch, which needs no power for itself. A smart switch is different: it has a Wi-Fi or Zigbee radio inside that must stay powered all the time, even when the light is off.
How smart switches get their power
Neutral switches
A switch that uses a neutral connects across live and neutral, just like any other appliance, and powers its electronics from there. This is the simplest and most stable design. The SONOFF M5 Matter wall switch, the SONOFF MINI ONE (MINI-1GS) relay, the SONOFF POW Elite 20A and the SONOFF BASIC-1GSP 32A all work this way, and their official wiring diagrams require a neutral (N) connection.
No-neutral (single live wire) switches
A no-neutral switch has to "borrow" a very small current through the light itself to keep its electronics alive. That is why these switches have a minimum load. SONOFF lists 3 W minimum for the SONOFF ZBM5 Zigbee in no-neutral mode, and Aqara lists 3 W minimum on single live wire for the Aqara Z1. The SONOFF ZBMINI-L2 relay is also designed for no-neutral boxes and is optimised for low-wattage LED bulbs, but it is not suitable for fans or other inductive loads.
No-neutral switches use low-power Zigbee radios rather than Wi-Fi, because Wi-Fi needs more power than can be borrowed through a bulb. So they always need a Zigbee hub: for example the SONOFF Zigbee Bridge Pro or SONOFF iHost for SONOFF, or the Aqara Hub M100 or Aqara Hub M1S Gen 2 for Aqara.
How to check your switch box (safely)
- Switch off the breaker for that circuit at the distribution board. Turning off the switch is not enough.
- Confirm the power is off: the light should not turn on, and ideally test with a proper voltage tester.
- Unscrew the switch plate and gently pull it forward.
- Count the wires and note their colours. In Pakistani wiring, live is commonly red or brown and neutral black or blue, but colours in older houses are often inconsistent, so do not rely on colour alone.
- If there is a separate wire (or bunch of wires) joined together and not connected to the old switch, that is very likely the neutral.
- Take a clear photo before disconnecting anything.
If you are unsure, stop there and send us the photo. We would much rather tell you before you buy than have a switch installed on the wrong wiring.
Safety: mains electricity at 220–230 V can kill. SONOFF and Aqara both state that their switches should be installed by a qualified electrician. SONOFF also says an MCB or RCBO of the right rating must be installed before the switch, for example 10 A for the 1 and 2 gang M5 and 6 A for the 3 gang M5 and for the ZBMINI-L2. Never work on a live circuit.
Which switch fits which box?
| Your switch box | Good choices |
|---|---|
| Has neutral, standard 86 type plate | SONOFF M5 Matter (no hub), SONOFF ZBM5 Zigbee, Aqara Z1 |
| No neutral, standard 86 type plate | SONOFF ZBM5 Zigbee, Aqara Z1 (both need a Zigbee hub) |
| Want to keep existing switch plates, neutral available | SONOFF MINI ONE (MINI-1GS) behind the switch |
| Want to keep existing switch plates, no neutral | SONOFF ZBMINI-L2 behind the switch |
| Curtain or roller shutter motor | SONOFF Orb-RBS shutter switch (86 type, Matter over Wi-Fi) |
| Geyser, heater, high load at the DB | SONOFF POW Elite 20A (20 A) or SONOFF BASIC-1GSP 32A (32 A, DIN rail) |
| No wiring at all, extra switch anywhere | SONOFF R5 Scene Controller, SONOFF SNZB-01P button, Aqara Wireless Mini Switch |
Common problems with no-neutral switches
LED bulb glows faintly or flickers when off
Because a small current passes through the bulb to power the switch, some very low-power or low-quality LED drivers glow or flicker. Use bulbs above the stated minimum load. Where a neutral is available, a neutral switch avoids the issue altogether. The ZBM5 can work in either mode, so if you later add a neutral you can simply connect it.
Switch keeps going offline
Zigbee switches need to be within range of the hub or of other powered Zigbee devices. Place the hub centrally and keep it powered during load-shedding (see our load-shedding guide).
Fan or motor behaves strangely
Check the load type allowed. The ZBMINI-L2, for example, is specified for resistive and LED loads, not fans.
What about 86 type boxes?
The 86 type is a square box, about 86 × 86 mm at the front plate (roughly 3 × 3 inches), and it is the common modern size in Pakistan. Our wall switches are the 86 versions: M5 is 86 × 86 × 41.5 mm, ZBM5 is 87 × 87 × 40.2 mm and Z1 is 86 × 86 × 33.5 mm. The depth matters too, especially in older boxes packed with wires, so measure before you order.
Our recommendation
If you are renovating, ask your electrician to bring a neutral into every switch box. It costs little during wiring and gives you every option later. In an existing house without neutral, go Zigbee: the SONOFF ZBM5 Zigbee for the SONOFF ecosystem or the Aqara Z1 for Aqara and Apple Home, plus a hub.
